Pectus Carinatum, which is what my little brother got diagnosed with today. Here is what that medical lingo means in real people language. His ribs and sternum have not fused correctly as he has grown and now that he is growing like a weed, it's more apparent. He has this bulg that stickes out, but it's a like a rib that you can mash back down. It's actually kinda gross feeling- he made me touch it. It's has varying degrees of severity and can damage your internal organs if not corrected. So he has to wear this chest brace for 16 hours a day for the next YEAR- hello, a year- not cool. I mean comon' he is a freshman in high school and you want him to wear a body armor getup. I feel sorry for him. Mom told him he could wear it when he gets home from school and through the night and maybe not have to wear it at school, bless him! He will have to wear the brace for at least a year, maybe more, depending on his chest and how much he is still growing. He will then have to wear it the rest of his life like a retainer. He goes next Tuesday to an orthopedicis place to be fitted for his "super suit", "bullet proof vest" or "turtle shell"- take your pick of names.
So send up a little prayer for him, I know it's not fun or cool or gonna be comfortable. But at least there is no surgery and it's can be corrected.
It's always something....
